Palace of the Fields* is a musical theatre production based on events during the 1992-1995 civil war in Sarajevo.

Three major ethnicities and religions were involved in the fight for Sarajevo during this war: Muslims, Serbians (Orthodox) and Croatian (Catholic). A Bosnian Serb man and a Muslim woman who lived in Sarajevo during this time wanted to continue their mixed-heritage relationship outside of Bosnia. As they ran across one of the main bridges leading out of Sarajevo, both were killed. Speculation continues over who was responsible for their deaths; sniper fire prevented their families from removing their bodies for several days.

By a peace agreement in 1995, leaders of the major ethnic/religious groups divided Bosnia-Herzegovina into multiple ethnic enclaves replacing the thriving and diverse communities that previously existed. The war claimed the lives of thousands, injured even more, and made residents refugees within their own country.

Palace of the Fields is not an historical account of the war but represents instead what life may have been like for those who lived in Sarajevo during this war.

*loosely, Turkish for Sarajevo.
